Our Non-Toxic Mattress Isn't Organic!
I announced INTELLIbed as our non-toxic mattress selection in early November. So now that we’ve had a few solid months to sleep on it, would I recommend it?
But before I get into the comfort of it all, I want to share why we chose INTELLIbed over a certified organic mattress, I mean, I am janny organically after all, so wasn’t that important? My mattress selection most certainly wasn’t an easy one; as most of you know, we sent a couple certified organic ones back because they just weren’t comfortable.
It was crucial for me to choose a non-toxic mattress without harmful chemicals such as VOCs, formaldehyde, flame retardants, pesticides, polyurethane foam, petrochemicals, polyvinyl chloride, phthalates and boric acid, some of which can off-gas from your mattress for up to 20 years!
The INTELLIbed’s materials are:
Anti-microbial (resistant to mold and fungus)
Inert (do not conduct heat or cold)
What sets INTELLIbed apart is their Gel-Matrix layer; a durable, medical-grade cushion which provides the ability to be both firm AND soft. This technology is used by hospitals to help heal the severely wounded, burn victims and long-term care patients with bedsores because it significantly reduces pressure points. The technology cannot be certified organic, otherwise, it would qualify because of all the points listed above.
The Gel-Matrix is formed into a grid of hallow squares, like flexible ice-cube trays, that respond by buckling to increased pressure. This response allows your back to receive firm support as needed and areas like your hips and shoulders to feel softer support.
The mattress we chose was INTELLIbed’s Numea Sapphire with the following layers:
Top Layer: Serene™ Comfort Quilt with Natural silica fire-blocker
Silica is not bioavailable (is not absorbed by contact) nor is it broken down
Individually wrapped spring coils
What is Talalay Latex?
Some of the most comfortable mattresses use memory foam that are highly chemically treated to achieve the “memory” feeling. Instead of this, INTELLIbed sourced a durable latex derived from rubber trees, Hevea Brasiliensis, called Talalay Latex which is:
Natural, pure, derived from the Hevea Brasiliensis tree.
Hygienic, doesn’t trap moisture
Hypoallergenic and naturally anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal.
Zero potential harmful materials for humans or environment.
That being said, INTELLIbed does offer a more “budget friendlier” bed called Azure which uses CertiPur Polyeurathane Foam. This is different from memory foam as it is:
I'm still not that comfortable with foam, even though it's better than memory foam, but depending on your goal and budget, one selection might be better for you than the other!
My husband and I were already looking at beds with different levels of support on either side of the bed; he wanted firmer, I wanted softer. But with the INTELLIbed, their food-grade Gel Matrix makes the bed firm AND soft. Say what? While it’s 3x firmer than the average foam, the design allows incredible pressure relief.
It’s basically like a “smart” bed without electronic interference! Oh, and speaking of electronics, the spring coils included in this bed are individually wrapped, not continuous, open or helical coils. If the coils aren’t individually wrapped, there is a concern that they could attract radio waves. Whether or not this is true, I don’t know, but you’re avoiding it here if it is.
When the INTELLIbed mattress arrived I couldn’t wait for my husband to try it. As I mentioned before, when we decided our next mattress would be memory foam-free, we had a hard time agreeing on what was comfortable. We spent months doing the dreaded mattress shopping and it wasn’t easy.
So when he tried it for the first time I remember waiting while thinking please don’t hate it, please don’t hate it….and phew! He didn’t! In fact, he mentions once a week how happy he is with our choice and coming from a guy with a slipped disc in his back for 20 years, that’s saying a lot!
Apparently I sleep like a log on it too. My husband usually gets up about an hour before me and has to take several precautions to keep from waking his light-sleeping bride. He says my breathing is so much deeper these days and it’s harder to wake me up; which is gold because you know this mama loves her sleep! I noticed a difference as well because I was used to being woken then not being able to go back to sleep at 5:30 every morning. That extra hour is truly priceless.
So if you’re looking for that #jannyapproved mattress, this is the one we’ve been recommending. In fact, several of our friends have climbed in our bed just to test it out! And if you’re in the market, my readers get a special treat from INTELLIbed.
