AYUNA Skincare and the Science Behind Topical Fasting
While at the Indie Beauty Expo in January, I was introduced to a revolutionary skincare line from Spain called AYUNA. I don’t use the word “revolutionary” lightly; they are legitimately executing a unique concept unheard of in skincare today.
AYUNA’S formulations are a true marriage of science and organic botanicals with a minimalistic approach: LESS IS BEAUTY. They promote a healthy view of aging while assisting the skin to self-repair. How?
Well, it’s a skincare concept based on fasting. If you read my post a few months ago about how fasting from food can help regenerate cells, it might make sense that similar results can be achieved through topical fasting.
AYUNA believes when we use products with active ingredients, it overstimulates our skin with excess activity resulting in skin sensitivity and oxidative damage. Their approach is to, instead, feed the skin precisely what it needs to stay balanced and protected while accelerating its ability to self-repair and regenerate.
The basis for topical fasting, limiting the intake with a balanced “diet”, is that it eliminates overstimulation which initiates the mechanisms for self-repair and regeneration. This, in turn, essentially eliminates a boatload of unnecessary products.
This is incredible because basically when the body is kick started into “self-healing” mode, it identifies your skin’s needs and deficiencies and addresses them!
The top requested skincare products address concerns like wrinkles, redness, hyperpigmentation, puffy eyes, elasticity repair and improved skin texture. So wouldn’t it be nice address each needed concern without having to use separate products for each? That’s where AYUNA comes in!
All products from AYUNA are even formulated for safe application around the eye contour so there is no need for a separate eye-area specific product. Furthermore, AYUNA’S products are developed to also protect the skin from toxins and oxidative and inflammatory stress.
Let me just say that this line probably wouldn’t have caught my attention with the “fasting” theory had I not just studied the concept. And once I started using the products, some results were pretty instantaneous and have been improving day after day.
Their full line consists of just 4 products, 5 if you include the choice in face creams, and here they are!
Yes, I’ve been using a true soap for cleansing, shelving my oil cleansing during this trial period to test the benefits of the full AYUNA line. Enriched with saponified Borage, Olive and Coconut oils along with activated charcoal, this bar provides a deep detox as it absorbs and dispels impurities, sebum and toxins. I felt the scent of the essential oil combination was initially too strong for me, but after a few days, I adjusted to the power.
It’s important to know the essential oils in this soap are used not simply for fragrance purposes. AYUNA chose Gurjum Balsam, Frankincense, Myrrh, Chamomile, Rosemary and Bucchu essential oils because of their ability to assist in calming, protecting and connecting the brain and skin.
The result is a soft and squeaky clean face set for healing mode!

The Creams: CREAM I and CREAM II
This is where the magic happens. The cream is my jam; you know you’ve found a winner when you have a miniature panic-attack as you hit the bottom of the jar! This is a face cream like no other. I’ve noticed an undeniable improvement in the softness of my skin and a more even and brighter complexion. I keep comparing the elasticity and softness of my face to my daughter’s, and while she always wins, I’m not too far off!
The creams are offered in two textures with two levels of emolliency. While both are suitable for sensitive skins, the choice comes down to preference.
CREAM I, or Light, the product I use, provides an immediate velvety texture without any greasy residue. It absorbs quickly and may be the desired preference for those leaning toward an oily skin type.
CREAM II, or Rich, provides a high level of hydration and nutrition with a creamier experience that may be desired for those with drier, more fragile and/or more mature skin.
While the Cream was magnificent and left my skin absolutely happy, I’m still so conditioned to using oils, it was hard to break out of the habit of reaching for them. The routine is so quick and simple, it felt like I was missing several steps!
Cleanse and Cream? That can’t be all! Well, for most days, yes, but there are two additional products that are absolute must haves: AYUNA also offers a volcanic mask and a waterless exfoliate…as in, no water necessary.
ESSENCE, the High Protein Cream-in-Oil Peel, is their waterless, grainless, gentle exfoliation product and definitely the WOW product in their line because of the immediate, dramatic improvement in the skin’s texture and brightness. You apply evenly as a mask over the face, or spot treat areas of need, and allow to work on your skin for 5-10 minutes, then roll the product off by swiping your hands over your face. Once buffed off, the product leaves behind a smooth, light oil finish along with incredibly soft skin. The before and after effect on this one is strong!
Essence $145 ($123.25 with discount)
BALM is their cool, creamy mask designed to draw out impurities, tighten and hydrate while enhancing the skin’s natural ability to protect itself.
This product definitely gives an immediate radiant glow and begins to tighten the areas that need it.
You can even spot treat problematic areas as needed instead of doing an entire face mask. I recommend you rinse this one off in the shower due to the black color from the carbons, plus you’ll want to emulsify the product with water as you remove.
Balm $130 ($110.50 with discount)
I inquired why they do not offer a toner, a product used to help align the pH balance of the skin. Their response was because each of the products are already designed to equilibrate the skin therefore an additional product is not necessary.
After using these products til I was scraping the bottom the jars, I felt I was confident enough to be able to boast about them and my intention of getting more! I’ve struggled with skin issues for as long as I can remember, and my skin feels the best it’s been in years. My skin is softer than ever, my skin tone is evening out and my hyperpigmentation is slowly fading.
As a luxury skincare line, it is pricier than most, and because of that, I’ve partnered AYUNA to provide a code offering 15% off your order and free shipping. Not only that, but we worked to get their Minimum package available for you! This was important to me because I know how hard it is to commit to full size product that you aren’t necessarily sure about yet.
Minimum comes with a full size CREAM of your choice along with travel sizes of ESSENCE and BALM. If you apply the discount code to this, you get all 3 products for about the same price as one full size CREAM!
- Minimum Light (with Cream I) $240 ($204 with discount)
- Minimum Rich (with Cream II) $240 ($204 with discount)
Use the code JANNYORGANICALLY at checkout to save 15% and get free shipping on your entire order from now until June 3, 2017!
Since the code has expired, Beauty Heroes has begun to offer AYUNA in their shop, which means all members get the product at 15% off automatically! Shop them all here!
For those going to the Indie Beauty Expo in Dallas, make sure you stop by their booth (#504) and ask for the exfoliation demo! And yes, they can apply my code in person as well! Code cannot be combined with any other offers.
Just a note about AYUNA's ingredients which are:
- Sourced ethically and sustainably
- Ecocert compliant
- EWG Verified
- 100% natural, and organic where possible
- Obtained through clean and green processes which do not generate any toxic impurities
In compliance with EU regulations, their ingredient list uses the term fragrance or parfum but take heart, it's a 100% essential oil blend containing no synthetics. AYUNA also only uses safe, clean alchohols with no denaturant additives.
Regarding Sodium Benzoate in the Creams to preserve cell cultures: this ingredient has been deemed GRAS (generally recognized as safe) in cosmetics. The concern about this ingredient arose when used in soft drinks containing absorbic acid (vitamin C) as that combination can potentially create benzene. There is no such concern for the ingredient combination in these products.
