Going Green Doesn't Have to Stink! + an Osmia GIVEAWAY!

The Smell Good Post - Going Organic Doesn't Have to Stink - janny: organically. #greenbeauty

Stop! Back away from your perfume. Slowly. No, actually, do it quickly, it's killing me.

Women have lamented to me that while they want to make the switch to clean, green and organic beauty products, they feel as though they have to sacrifice the "girly" smells they've become accustomed to in their current perfumes, lotions, shampoos, deodorant and candles.

The sad news is the fragrance industry has more or less created an addiction to the toxin-laced scents. Don't forget, because of trade secret protection, companies can hide harmful chemicals behind the term "fragrance". There are thousands of fragrance chemicals being used in countless combinations to create the scents in conventional products all over the world. So much so that the European Commission is starting to tighten their perfume regulations strictly on the basis of allergies and skin irritation.

Personally, I avoid synthetic fragrance like secondhand smoke...and you should too! The chemicals in conventional perfume and beauty products are dangerous, carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting, headache-causing toxins and should be banned. Remember, what you put on your body (and even your hair) ends up in your blood stream and can affect your organ system, brain and hormones.

Making the switch is a personal choice, but people around you are being affected. If your product leaves a cloud of fragrance behind in the elevator, room or essentially wherever you go, please, please stop and consider others, particularly children.

Even the unborn are incredibly susceptible to environmental toxins. Dr. Philip Landrigan, professor of pediatrics at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, says that chemicals such as those found in synthetic fragrance "have potential to cause injury to the developing brain to produce neurodevelopmental disorders." These findings show that disorders such as Autism, ADHD and brain disorders are strongly linked to the exposure to toxins while the brain is developing. Remember, children's brains are still developing until about age 21! {Make sure to read to the end about a note about pregnancy}

Organic and clean brands may be dominated by unscented or lightly scented products, however, there are plenty fabulous fragrances created with organic and natural ingredients like essential oil, flowers, herbs and spices without the harmful effect of synthetics.

Here are a few of my favorites! (Click on the photo for more info)

Body Moisturizers

One Love Organics Gardenia + Tea Antioxidant Body Serum

Who doesn't love gardenia? Ok, maybe you. Just chill. This is one of my favorite floral scents! This serum by One Love Organics is designed to be used on damp skin post bath/shower to lock in moisture while nourishing and delivering powerful antioxidants to help protect the body from environmental elements and stressors.

Gardenia is such a beautiful and recognizable scent, it's hard to resist using this one simply to enjoy the fragrance!  One Love Organics uses 100% organic ingredients and is EcoCert certified

Osmia Organics Body Oil

Much like the serum above, this oil is designed to deliver moisture. Osmia Organics Founder, Dr. Sarah Villafranco believes we should be using oil rather than lotion to moisturize our body. Why? Because lotion is 70% water, so it makes sense to use an oil on damp skin instead. In my opinion it moisturizes far better than lotion, all while providing potent anti-oxidant, anti-aging properties with organically sourced fragrances. Yes, fragrances, plural - you have several to choose from!

This is our household's latest addition and arguably a favorite. We apply in the shower after tap-drying so there is still water on our bodies. Now, I may be a big green beauty geek and my husband has a handful of his own favorites, and this is one of them. He literally cannot shut up about it. I love it when he talks clean beauty to me!

Mahalo Skincare Vacation Glow

Ok so this should have it's own category but you can't put this little star in a box because it has multiple functions. Mahalo Skin Care calls it Vacation Glow because it leaves a golden veil over your skin. Maryna sent me a sample a few weeks ago and I found myself using it because I loved the smell!

The potion contains Macadamia, Sea Buckthorn, Argan Tamanu and Kukui Nut oils blended with essential oils like Jasmine, Geranium and Frankincense to create a unique and notable scent. Let's not forget it's designed to actually hydrate, balance, fade scars and restore skin (among others). You can apply to your skin or hair - I find myself applying to my arms and neck, then patting my face and scrunching my hair as a final touch.

Don't you want it? You can't have it. Well, not yet. Team Mahalo will be launching this at A Night For Green Beauty next week and then it will be available for online purchase here August 6th! Aaaaannnd you get a 15% discount until August 15th using the code: jannyorganically15

Homemade Du Jour Blueberry Green Tea Body Butter

Blueberry Green Tea? Sounds like an ice cream flavor I'd devour...but not quite. This is an organic body butter that is ultra moisturizing while smelling, well, delicious. If the idea of a serum or oil don't appeal to you, body butters are a good solution. They are waterless, so a little goes a long way. This particular "flavor" also gives you a nourishing supply of anti-inflammatories, antioxidants, Vitamins C, E, K and Manganese!

This is a small business operating on Etsy using certified organic products free of chemicals, fillers and unnecessary ingredients. Plus, you can get a discount with the coupon code JANNYORGANICALLY.

Bath Time

Osmia Organics Soap

Most soaps are dirty? Not this one! Chemical-free and absolutely pure. Milky Rose is one of many luxurious scents to choose from and even comes with actual rose petals on the top! Delicious, moisturizing, cleansing and smells like it looks!

Shampoo & Conditioner

Acure Organics Shampoo and Conditioner

Acure Organics, you can't get away from them these days. They can't seem to do much wrong, besides promoting a cat (but who can argue with those credentials) though I'm a customer for life if they continue to post about their Executives falling, spilling coffee and getting stuck in the sprinklers.

But really, the ingredients are amazing, they clean stupendously and smell superb. They are available in:

  • Lemongrass: For all hair types. Clarifying Shampoo and conditioner promotes shiny, clean hair.

  • Mint: For normal to fine/limp hair. Promotes thicker, fuller and uplifted hair.

  • Argan: For normal to dry/damaged/curly hair. My personal favorite as it moisturizes my curls and smells like almonds!

Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant with Grapefruit

You stink and don't want to, we get it. Guess what? Antiperspirants are actually making your armpit condition worse. Your body is designed to sweat when it needs to and when you apply an antiperspirant (with toxic aluminum, nonetheless), you are hindering that process.

I went through several loser natural deodorants before landing on this winner. Many people have a reaction to baking soda, and this works the best of any I've tried without the baking soda effect. I noticed I simply don't sweat as much when I use this either - and at the end of every day, I still smell like grapefruit. Ok, that was a stretch...but I don't stink!

Red Flower Candles

I'm so happy Credo Beauty carries these beauties! We have not had candles in our home in ages! While there are several candles options free of synthetic fragrance, they usually are made entirely with soy wax. Even if the soy is organic, it still can be an endocrine disruptor, so I avoid it as much as I can.

This babies are made with vegetable wax which can include some soybean, but it's definitely less than every other one on the market, so this was a winner for me. They smell incredible and may carry a heavier fragrance then what you'd expect from a natural product. The 6 oz. candles burn for 50 hours. I find myself burning them for 20 minutes at a time and getting over an hour of the fragrance.

My favorites are Ocean and Japanese Peony.

Red Flower Organic Perfume

Red Flower not only makes candles I love, but also this killer perfume. The fragrances are collected from essential oils and certified organic plants and the final product delivers a powerful natural fragrance and unlike synthetic fragrance, these perfumes interact with your body's natural oils, creating a unique scent all your own.

Red Flower's organic, luxury perfumes compete with top designer brands; even the NY Times rated their Guaiac scent 4 Stars (Excellent) calling it "one of the most exquisitely lovely perfumes you have ever smelled."

As enchanting as it is, I'm one to go against the grain, especially because my pallet preferred Champa just slightly over Guaiac since it was unlike anything I've ever smelled. It has a bit of a sultry pull to it while the Guaiac is a lovely floral aroma.

These perfumes are long-lasting and carry a bit more power than a perfume oil - I don't ever need to re-apply throughout the day. They carry a higher price tag, but I've been using mine regularly and it's pretty clear I'm not going to run out anytime soon!  Currently, there are 3 scents available to choose from.

Leahlani Skincare Pefume Oil

These are my favorite tropical "flavors" handcrafted naturally with oils, scents and extracts by Leah herself on the island of Kauai. I use Mahana regularly, especially during the summer since it smells like the tropics in a bottle! The scent lingers for a couple hours and always draw compliments.

Osmia Organics Natural Perfume and Perfume Oil

Ah, this is good stuff. These perfumes/oils are designed for you {and those who come close to you} to enjoy without leaving scent trail wherever you go. They range from sweet to rustic and hold their scent for up to 5 hours.

These perfumes are handmade in small batches with essential oils, CO2 extracts and absolutes in a base of organic oil or organic alcohol.

The difference between the perfume oils and perfumes is that perfume oil is made with an oil base—a mixture of  jojoba oil and fractionated coconut oil (Blum, Bria, Posso, Prima, Cedar Smoke). The perfumes are made with an organic grape alcohol base (Trusque, Couro, Juniper Fire and Teale).

With 9 unique scents to choose from, you won't run out of options here...several are even unisex, so yay, you get to share! But even better, now you have a chance to win a sample set!

A note about whether essential oil usage in pregnancy is safe - from Osmia Founder, Dr. Sarah Villafranco:

The Smell Good Post - Going Organic Doesn't Have to Stink - janny: organically.
It really depends on your philosophy regarding essential oils during pregnancy. There is a wide spectrum of recommendations, from avoiding almost all of them, to avoiding only a few, and very little research to support any of these opinions. We do use essential oils in almost all of our products, so it’s really a personal choice. The oils most commonly listed as those to be avoided in pregnancy include these, which we do use in our products: basil, cedar, clary sage, cypress, fennel, jasmine, juniper, myrrh, and rose. While I agree that these oils should not be taken internally, or used in high concentrations, I’m not convinced that they are as dangerous in pregnancy when used in skin care products. There are a few oils like wintergreen and pennyroyal that should be completely avoided in all forms during pregnancy, but we do not use these oils at all.
